Our learning programme at Kew’s wild botanic garden in West Sussex inspires curiosity and wonder in the world of plants and fungi.

We offer hands-on education sessions designed around inquiry-based learning and our sessions link to the curriculum and Kew’s science work. 

A full-day’s educational trip to Wakehurst typically features two to three sessions, depending on the workshop. Our team work with you to plan a full day or half-day that suits your preferred learning themes and timings.

    KS3 Banking on seeds

    Pupils visit the inspirational Millennium Seed Bank to discover its vital role in the worldwide conservation of plant biodiversity.
  • 1 or 2 hours

    KS3 Plant reproduction

    Pupils observe a variety of flowers, fruits and seeds using hand lenses and microscopes. They investigate how plants reproduce and find out why seeds are stored in the Millennium Seed Bank.

    Explore our diverse plant collection and get to know some of the useful plants growing. Should their seeds be saved for the future in Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst?

    Become a pollen expert and use your microscope skills to help solve a crime.
  • 60 - 90 minutes

    KS3 A place to grow - an introduction to fieldwork techniques

    How are plants affected by different environmental conditions? Pupils investigate a meadow and woodland area to discover how physical factors affect plant growth.

    Pupils explore the diversity of plants in our botanic gardens through the lens of Art and Design.

    KS3 Woodland studies

    Pupils take part in a woodland investigation in one of the sustainably managed coppice woodland areas at Wakehurst.

    KS3 Freshwater studies

    Pupils explore the biodiverse freshwater environment of Wakehurst wetlands and discover their importance for a sustainable future.

    Pupils carry out a fieldwork investigation in one of our beautiful meadows and discover its importance for biodiversity.

    How do plants exist in challenging environments? Pupils investigate how plants are adapted to a variety of native habitats.
